Biography/Details

The Christian liberal arts have been a driving force throughout Dr. Hansen's life. His early education at Veritas School in Newberg, Oregon developed in him a passion for lifelong learning, which led him to study Mathematics and Computer Science at Westmont College. He graduated in 2019, and—inspired by a summer of research with Dr. Russell Howell—pursued a Ph.D. in Mathematics at UC Santa Barbara. Under the direction of his advisor, Dr. Fedya Manin, he studied how nilpotent algebraic structures influence both the geometric behavior of topological spaces, as well as the patterns of aperiodic tilings. He defended his thesis in 2025. That same fall, he returned with enthusiasm to Westmont College as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. In his leisure time, Dr. Hansen can be found singing, reading, swimming, biking, running, baking, and enjoying the company of his church family.
