To affirm Westmont’s role in and concern for climate change, professors from several disciplines joined students from the Student Environmental Awareness League in organizing a special teach-in on the Dining Commons Lawn Sept. 24 at lunchtime. Three professors offered interdisciplinary perspectives on the impact of climate change. Provost Mark Sargent opened the time with a word of prayer. Biology professor Jeff Schloss addressed the ecological effects of climate change and how it affects the campus. Religious studies professor Sandy Richter spoke theologically about our divine invitation to be stewards of creation. Sociology professor Meredith Whitnah discussed the social movement of environmental justice and how social change finds success. Kenny Chism ’17, the sustainability coordinator, challenged students to act both on campus and in their personal lives. The organizers distributed a flyer with brief answers to frequently asked questions about climate change as well as information about getting involved.
