“Living artfully is important to me,” says Talia Sheets ’13. “I’ve always had an affinity for art. Artists need to really see things, and I want to be totally involved in everything in my life, pay full attention and be receptive.” Her senior art project is an installation piece that explores different ways of seeing. During a semester with the Oregon Extension program, she lived in the mountains away from cell phones and the Internet. “It was a life-changing experience,” she says. Her independent study there focused on the philosophy of art, a subject she hopes to pursue in graduate school and teach at the college level. But first she wants to travel throughout the United States after she graduates, working on a network of small farms. “I want to be transient for awhile, see different parts of the world and find other ways of living,” she says. Her experiences at Westmont have ranged from playing soccer with the Warriors for two years and participating in a short-term mission in Uganda with the team to serving with Potter’s Clay and writing arts and entertainment stories for the student newspaper. For three years, she has served as a Liberal Arts Ambassador, mentoring and tutoring students of all ages and encouraging them to consider college. The program requires her to learn about Christian liberal arts education and attend a certain number of lectures and arts events each semester, which she enjoys. Recruited to play soccer, she received both athletic and merit scholarships. She has also benefitted from an art scholarship. “Financially, the scholarships have made a difference,” she says. “I’m very grateful.”
